Podcasting with WeVideo

In the spring, I worked with Marin Marciano, one of our amazing art teachers and her Advanced Art Studio students, to create podcasts using WeVideo.

Mrs. Marciano required students listen to and reflect on art podcasts throughout the course. I was really impressed with the amount of work that Mrs. Marciano put in to this planning stage. Students were not just learning and thinking about various art topics, they were analyzing the media (podcast) in which the discussions were occurring. This was an intensive and important step which allowed students to experience and evaluate a variety of podcast styles. MEDIA LITERACY PERFECTION!!!

Some samples of listening assignments are below:
PODCAST: A. Warhol's Art of Self-Promotion | A Piece of Work | WNYC - ASSIGNMENTS
PODCAST: Questlove Hearts Emojis | A Piece of Work | WNYC - ASSIGNMENTS

Students to create their own podcast as one of the final projects. At that time, I contacted WeVideo to become a part of the beta program for podcasting, the feature has since gone live to subscribers.

As the library media specialist, I taught and supported students with the technical aspects of podcasting. I created 2 Guides to help students: a Podcast Planning Guide and  How to Podcast with WeVideo (they are posted below).

Mrs. Marciano's podcast planning assignments, timelines and rubrics can be found HERE.
The students were reluctant at first, the typical not wanting to hear their own voice. There were a few issues that will be remedied in the future with access to better mics and equipment.

Mrs. Marciano adds When art students questioned WHY I had them listen to podcasts (they’re not actually visual) and WHY I was asking them to create their own podcast (that’s not a piece of tactile art), I replied that it’s more than just listening or just making. It’s about forming opinions, listening to new ones, and analyzing what content they choose to listen to. I learned a lot from this assignment, mostly about how stubborn and reluctant students can be to a new idea/process and also when to stick to my gut and when to adjust in order to better suit my students.”

Despite those initial hiccups, the student podcasts were impressive!!

Rilee gave me permission to post his podcast: The Evolution of the Disney Princess

Listening, analyzing, reflecting, planning and creating podcasts was a rich learning experience that I cannot wait to be a part of again this year and expanding in to other subjects in the school.
